Sizing Graphics

Return to Post Production

Create using a graphics program at 720 x 540 pixles or multiple. 720x540-square

Resize to 720 x 486 pixles. Notice that the image is squeezed vertically (Objects appear wider). 720x486-square
Import into video editing program and the pixles will be converted to non-square ones and the proportions will be restored. 720x486-non-square

Often you can make satisfactory use of a graphic originally created in any 4:3 aspect ratio (640 x 480 for example), because the resulting distortion is not obvious to the viewer. This is especially true of text and geometric shapes, except where a circle or square is demanded. Convert it to a .TGA file. Also, applying a 2D DVE to the image in the editing program will allow you to re-size and adjust the image.

Be sure to create a mask or alpha channel of the unwanted background in your graphic. Save your graphic as a .TGA file. Also, to avoid a line around your image make your graphic's background harmonize with the rest of the final video image. That will cause the edge to blend in and avoid a white (or black) outline.

If you are shooting in standard definition (SD) 16x9 format, create your original graphic at 960x540 pixles, and re-size it to 720x486. This will squeeze it in two directions. In your editing software, provided you have it set to 16x9, and on a 16x9 monitor the graphic will appear properly proportioned. On a SD monitor the image will appear squeezed horizontally (Objects appear skinny).
